Fare of London’s Administration Manager John Cawood was recently awarded the prestigious Incorporation of Coopers Earl of Wessex Scholarship having received a distinction grade in the level 3 qualification in Wines and Spirits which he completed with the Wines and Spirits Education Trust (WSET) in 2013.

The scholarship was awarded following a rigorous judging process in the form of a viva voce competition which took place at the WSET offices in October last year. Thirty of the highest achieving students were selected from the 8,000 who completed the course last year to take part in the competition where participants were interviewed and given challenges such as verbal tests and a blind tasting challenge. The scholarships were awarded based on the performance of each student.

The scholarship will see John spend 2 days in Scotland with master whisky blender Richard Paterson to learn how whisky is produced, aged and blended.

Since completing the Level 3 award, John has since enrolled on the 2 year WSET Diploma in Wines and Spirits which he is due to complete in November this year.

Commenting on his achievements, John says: “I was so proud to have achieved such great results in my Wines and Spirits course. To receive such a prestigious scholarship in our industry is a true honour. Although I have an administrative role in the company, I have been given the opportunity to develop my knowledge in food and beverages. Fare of London really goes the extra mile to ensure their staff have a great knowledge and understanding of the industry.

“I’m really excited about the trip to Scotland as it will increase my knowledge of Scotch whisky, which will be very helpful for the exam in spirits that I have coming up later this year and also will allow me to apply my knowledge to the benefit of Fare of London’s drinks offerings.”
