Held on Thursday 25th September 2014 in the spectacular setting of St Albans Cathedral which was dressed in beautiful flowers for the 2014 Flower Festival, the district's business people came together to celebrate the outstanding contribution of business to the community.
Nominations were based not solely on successes and achievements but also upon the impact of those achievements on the business community and the people working within it. The awards were open to all businesses whose business strategy encompasses policies and projects that have a positive impact on St Albans District. The activities should bring about economic, social or environmental benefits for the community.
Mr Bejerano was up against five very strong contenders within the category for the President’s Award including Annie Brewster, Anthony Baker, Ellena Ophira and James Allen – all described as worthy winners in their own right by President Peter Goodman.
Mr Bejerano, who has owned Sopwell House since 1986, has lavished the Georgian country house, once owned by Lord Mountbatten, with passion, hard-work and innovation along with significant financial investment and refurbishment, particularly in the last two years. He has taken the building from a 29 bedroom hotel with just one restaurant and lounge, to a 128 bedroom luxury 4 star hotel now offering 2 restaurants and 2 bars, dedicated conference and event wing with 19 function suites.
The Country Club & Spa was opened in 1991 by MP Peter Lilley and was the first of its kind in Hertfordshire. This was refurbished in 2012 to keep its reputation as offering some of the finest health and leisure facilities in the county.
Sopwell House has long had a prestigious name within the local area, particularly as a popular wedding venue and has also been known for accommodating celebrities and football teams including England, Arsenal and a whole host of international and domestic teams.
Abraham’s passion for Sopwell House, one of three hotels that make up the AB Hotels Group, continues with further significant investment planned in 2015.
On winning the award Abraham Bejerano said “I am so delighted and proud to have won this prestigious award recognising the contribution made to the local and business community over the last 28 years in the wonderful City of St Albans. This is an award not only for me personally but also for my very hardworking team at Sopwell House.”
