Payment Card Technologies wins at the Paybefore Awards Europe for the Travel Welfare Solution

Digital payments company, Payment Card Technologies (PCT) has won an award at the 2014 Paybefore Awards Europe. PCT’s entry to the Problem Solver category for its Travel Welfare card was selected as Best in Category by a panel of industry experts at the third annual ceremony.

The awards were created to honour excellence and innovation in the prepaid, mobile emerging payments industry in the U.K. and Europe. Entries across 10 categories represented programs from countries including the U.K., Turkey, Austria, France, Germany, Portugal, Poland, Hungary and Italy.

Ian Clowes, CEO of PCT said “It is great to receive this prestigious award for the Travel Welfare card. The Travel Welfare card is one of the most innovative schemes that the industry is currently undertaking and this win proved that. Travel Welfare was the UK’s first prepaid card for airlines to issue to disrupted air passengers. Airlines have been keen to find a slicker and more secure way of managing the process of issuing light refreshment compensation whilst speeding up access to food and drink for inconvenienced travellers.

”Being voted by peers who recognise the value of this solution is hugely gratifying. We are extremely proud of the groundbreaking Travel Welfare card, winning this award is a fantastic achievement.”

The Travel Welfare card is the UK’s first prepaid card for airlines to issue to disrupted air passengers. Airlines are obliged by EU legislation to provide compensation in the form of light refreshments for passengers experiencing delays of more than 2 hours. The solution developed by Travel Welfare and PCT is a VISA prepaid card loaded by the airline with funds and provided to customers to use within selected food and drink outlets in the airport.

In 2013 easyJet became the first to take up the technology and eliminate the use of paper vouchers for light refreshments, allowing the airline, retailers and ground handling staff to benefit from a more streamlined and efficient process, across over 61 airports.

“Paybefore Awards Europe shines a spotlight on the innovators using payments to solve complex problems for a variety of businesses,” said Loraine DeBonis, Paybefore editor-in-chief and chair of the judging panel. “Companies like PCT are pushing the boundaries of what is possible in payments,” she continued. “We are proud to recognise its contribution to advancing the prepaid and emerging payments industry.”

“It’s an exciting time in payments everywhere in the world, but this year’s Paybefore Awards Europe winners demonstrate how quickly prepaid and mobile solutions are replacing the legacy of paper-based systems,” added Marilyn Bochicchio, Paybefore’s CEO. “Paybefore Awards is proud to recognise the organisations that are taking on paper in its many forms—not just cash—to improve business, government and consumers’ lives.”
