Angela Perkins has been shortlisted for Best Venue Salesperson in the Exhibition News Awards 2014 with the winner to be announced at a gala dinner at ExCeL London on Thursday, April 3.
She will be competing against peers from Olympia London, Amsterdam RAI Exhibition and Convention Centre and the Harrogate International Centre at the Exhibition News Awards which recognise outstanding achievements in the exhibition industry for individuals, organisers, venues, shows and suppliers.
Angela, who was appointed last July, leads a seven-strong sales team and she has already secured the business of 19 new shows to be staged at the Ricoh Arena in 2014 along with enquiries worth over £1.6 million.
She has also introduced helicopter tours to showcase the venue and the city of Coventry for potential clients, familiarisation visits for event organisers and site tours with a ‘wow’ factor.
Angela said this was the first time she had been nominated in the UK for an international award.
“It has been a whirlwind seven months since being appointed head of sales at the Ricoh Arena and this nomination is the icing on the cake,” she said.
“We are pro-actively going out to win business in the exhibition market and concentrating on new business development.
“It is paying dividends since Multiplay is bringing the UK’s biggest gaming festival – Insomnia – to the Ricoh next month after signing a five-year deal which is a huge show of faith.
“Customer service is extremely important to me which is why we have started familiarisation visits for event organisers with the Mamma Mia and pub-style evenings proving to be a great success.
“We have also overhauled the site tours for potential clients and in one week in January we held 50 tours.
“This Ricoh Arena is so special that once you get people through the door it isn’t really that difficult to impress clients. The venue is flexible and unique and it is sometimes an easy win but I absolutely believe in the venue and when you’re passionate about something it really does come across to clients.
“I’m looking forward to joining my industry colleagues at the presentation evening and I will be keeping my fingers crossed!”
Angela is also the driving force behind the On Your Bike 24-hour cycle challenge at the Ricoh Arena on Saturday, June 21 to raise £35,000 for the Memusi Foundation after she volunteered at a school in Kenya last year.
She was inspired to help build a secondary school to support Kenyan children escape poverty through education and she is encouraging businesses and organisations in Coventry and Warwickshire to sign-up.
“The Memusi Foundation is a charity which is very close to my heart and we still need more teams of six to take part in the challenge on static bikes which will mean each cyclist pedalling for four hours. “It will be great fun as well as helping to raise funds to build a secondary school which will make a real difference to the lives of Kenyan schoolchildren.”
