The highly-regarded venue in Castle Combe once again came out top of the rankings in the updated list of ‘The Top 100 Courses in England’ released by the popular website www.top100golfcourses.co.uk.
As well as being rated the best course in Wiltshire, The Manor House moved up three places in the standings to be ranked 92nd in England – inside the top five per cent of courses in the country.
The 6,500-yard 18-hole championship course, which is set in 365 acres of rolling countryside, is described by the website as “one of the most enjoyable and exciting rounds of golf you’re likely to experience in the whole of the British Isles.”
It adds: “The course is a relative youngster, opening for play in 1992 and Peter Alliss and Clive Clark designed it. The maturity of the setting makes the course seem much older, where stately oak and beech trees line the magnificent fairways.
“Alliss and Clark made the most of the undulating terrain and they’ve fitted the course into its surroundings like a silk glove. The River Bybrook punctuates the layout bringing its share of beauty and drama, especially at “Burton Brook” (17th hole) one of the best and most exciting par-threes you’ll find anywhere.
“Just like the village of Castle Combe, the closing hole is one of the prettiest finishes in England. The green on this par-four is guarded jealousy by numerous bunkers and a series of interconnecting ponds.”
Andrew Ryan, golf operations and retail manager at The Manor House, said: “It’s fantastic to receive any accolade and to be selected as the best course in Wiltshire again makes us all very proud. “It is deserved recognition for everyone’s continued hard work and determination to deliver a first-class golfing experience to our members and visitors.”
