Germanwings is launching a new flight connection between Düsseldorf and Marseille, France’s second largest city, on 1 May 2015. Only Germanwings offers direct flights from Germany’s most densely populated state to this fascinating Mediterranean metropolis. Along with Paris, Lyon, Montpellier, Nice and Toulouse, Marseille is now the sixth destination in France which the German airline offers from Düsseldorf. Low-price flights are already available for booking.
Germanwings is launching with four flights a week from the outset to take advantage of the beautiful even climate in the south of France. The airline will fly to the Mediterranean coast every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. Marseille, European Capital of Culture 2013, awaits visitors with a special flair of its own which is characterised by the southern way of life and a sheer abundance of culture. The city emerged as a Greek trading point as early as the 7th century BC and owes its rapid growth to its protected position within a bay.
Nowadays, Marseille is considered to be France’s second cultural centre with a large number of important museums such as the Musée des civilisations de l’Europe et de la Méditerranée [Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations] or the Musée d'art contemporain [Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art]. The cityscape is dominated by the church of Notre-Dame de la Garde. Its viewing platform offers a spectacular panorama of the city. Marseille also has magnificent architecture from the modern period, for example the headquarters of the CMA CGM shipping company designed by Zaha Hadid.
In addition to traditional Provencal cuisine, the influences of immigrants from the whole of the Mediterranean can clearly be felt in the city’s restaurants: choose from Levantine, Maghreb, Greek, Italian, Corsican, Spanish or Armenian when eating out. The world-famous bouillabaisse fish stew also hails from Marseille: it was originally prepared by fishermen in Marseille’s restaurants from the unsold catch of fish, shrimps and mussels.
