Professional American basketball players and championship winners to host coaching sessions for the publicFor the first time ever, American Airlines will create a smaller version of its famous Miami basketball arena at Düsseldorf Airport as the main attraction at the annual Kinder.Flughafen.Sommer.Fest (Children’s Airport Summer Festival) on Sunday 4 August. The event takes place from 11am to 6pm.
Throughout the day there will be open sessions for the public to try a taste of America’s most popular international sport. Two players from this year’s championship winning team - James Jones and Jarvis Varnado - will travel from their base in Miami to Düsseldorf to host the free clinics. There will be opportunities to take photos with the players and win prizes in a series of competitions throughout the day. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to train like a basketball professional.
Stephen Davis, Head of Marketing for American Airlines in EMEA and Pacific, says: “we are delighted to offer this opportunity to our valued customers. It’s great to be able to introduce American traditions to the cities where we operate in Europe. Watching and supporting basketball is a real family thing in the US so it is fitting to incorporate it into this family festival. It will be a very special experience to play with such elite athletes.”
American Airlines launched a direct flight from Düsseldorf to Chicago earlier this year. From Chicago O’Hare, American connects to 200 onward flights to destinations throughout the US. There is convenient service to Miami where these players perform at their home venue: American Airlines Arena. American has a second flight from Germany - Frankfurt - to Dallas/ Fort Worth as well as transatlantic code share with Air Berlin (including a direct flight from Düsseldorf to Miami).
The regular US basketball season typically runs from October to April (with playoff games continuing until June) – a perfect time to visit Miami and catch a game while travelling for business or pleasure.
