Finnair certified in innovative environmental management program

Finnair has been certified as a Stage 1 operator in IATA’s Environmental Assessment (IEnvA) Program, a new and innovative environmental management system designed to independently assess and improve the environmental management of an airline. Finnair is part of a pilot group of airlines that has been developing and participating in the program.

“Minimising our carbon profile and fulfilling our environmental responsibility is essential for accomplishing our business goals,” says Ville Iho, Finnair’s Chief Operating Officer. “In a clear and consistent way, this important new standard will help us and all airlines improve fuel efficiency, reduce waste and limit greenhouse gas emissions in our operations.”

The environmental standards that underpin IEnvA are based on recognised environmental management system (EMS) principles (such as ISO 14001) and have been developed by a joint team of environmental consultants and leading airlines, including Finnair. Airline assessments, however – including Finnair’s – are undertaken by independent accredited Environmental Assessment Organisations that have demonstrated competencies in EMS auditing.

“We have a long history of environmental management at Finnair, and we have been happy to share our experiences and expertise in the development of these standards,” says Kati Ihamäki, Finnair’s Vice President, Sustainable Development. “Ultimately the airline sector’s long-term target of carbon neutral flight and other environmental goals depend on all of us working together. The continuous development of IEnvA will help make sure that all of our businesses have a lasting, sustainable future.”

“I am delighted that Finnair has satisfied the independent assessors and passed the IATA Environmental Assessment Stage 1,” says IATA’s Environment Director Paul Steele. “IEnvA is the first environmental management system applied to the aviation sector and enables an airline to improve its environmental management and follow best environmental practice. This makes Finnair one of the world’s leading carriers in the areas of environmental responsibility and sustainability.”

The initial scope of IEnvA is limited to flight operations and corporate activities, but new modules covering ground operations and maintenance are currently under development.
