Derived from the 1976 gangster movie with an all-child cast, Bugsy Malone is set in 1929 Chicago, with a storyline revolving around the battle for power between Fat Sam and Dandy Dan, supported by a cast of hoodlums and showgirls.
KDM’s Commercial Director Nicky Whyman said: “In addition to giving us a riotous and colourful theme, Bugsy Malone provides the opportunity for teams to collaborate in their own production of the show. We have sourced choreographers and singing coaches to rehearse groups through set routines and musical numbers from the show. Costumes and make-up artists transform the participants into their roles and they are taken to a ‘film studio’ complete with props. There they are filmed against a green screen and the footage is fused with a specially-created digital Bugsy Malone-style backdrop to show participants starring in the film.
The teambuilding activity is suitable for large teams, for either a half or full-day event. It is designed to encourage collaboration when learning a new skill and can be applied for a maximum of 10 teams.
KDM has already delivered the Bugsy Malone format for one client using Alton Towers as the location. Whyman added: “The teams really embraced the whole experience. It’s fantastic for breaking down barriers. Singing, dancing and acting are great stress-relievers and participants came away feeling really energized. The sense of collaboration in working toward a common goal has obvious corporate resonances and the opportunity to share images via social media makes it a highly motivational event.”
The Bugsy Malone concept can be delivered in any location large enough to afford rehearsal space, including conference rooms. The green screen shooting makes the venue background irrelevant and its immediate editing capability allows participants to view their portion of the film at the end of the session. And for full-day events incorporating evening entertainment dining rooms can be dressed as Sam’s Speakeasy Club with the entire movie featuring all the teams shown as the evening’s grand finale.
