Overnights for congresses secured directly by the Barcelona Convention Bureau double

The number of overnights for delegates attending congresses secured directly by Turisme de Barcelona’s Barcelona Convention Bureau (BCB) has doubled in the space of a year. The 560,000 hotel overnights invoiced to these delegates in 2013 represented a 92% increase over the figures for 2012 which totalled 290,371.

The spike in overnights is due to the sharp rise in the number of delegates attending congresses secured directly by the BCB, which attracted 126,000 participants. This figure is 34% higher than the number of delegates the consortium attracted in 2012, which totalled 93,367.

The corporate market is growing at a rapid rate
There was also a rise in corporate trips organised directly by the BCBwhich had the Catalan capital as their final destination. Although, in absolute terms, the number of participants in business meetings and incentive trips secured by BCB was lower than those in the congress market, there was still a notable rise in these segments in 2013.

The BCB in particular brought 64,000 participants to business meetings, conventions and incentive trips in the city. They accounted for 30,000 more than those who took part in 2012 andrepresented a percentage increase of 86% more visitors.

The conventions, business meetings and incentives promoted by the BCB accounted for 189,975 hotel overnights invoiced. The previous year, the figure stood at 107,282. This means that the overnights attributed to these corporate travellers has grown by 77%.

The Barcelona Convention Bureau is the Turisme de Barcelona programme that promotes the city as a destination for congresses, conventions and incentive trips.
