Scotch Corner Hotel launches search for guests from years gone by
The Holiday Inn Darlington A1 Scotch Corner, at the junction of the A1 and the A66 near Darlington, was formerly the Scotch Corner Hotel and its owners are calling on guests from years gone by to get in touch to share their memories.Scotch Corner takes its name from an old Roman road called Scotts Dyke and there has been a hotel on the site since the 16th century, where teams of horses were changed on long journeys and travellers rested and dined.
The present hotel was built and opened in June 1939 and, following a £3m investment in January by new owners The Cairn Group, it has been refurbished into a state-of-the-art contemporary venue to appeal to everyone from families to business delegates.
Now, the hotel is hoping to invite the former resident with the earliest memory of the Scotch Corner Hotel back, to enjoy a stay in one of its 91 en-suite bedrooms and full use of its leisure and restaurant facilities.
The Holiday Inn Darlington A1 Scotch Corner boasts a stylish bar and lounge serving refreshments and light meals, while its newly-opened, 75- cover Fratello’s restaurant offers a full menu of Italian dishes combining traditional ingredients with contemporary culinary techniques.
Work is also underway to create an impressive spa facility incorporating a number of relaxation and treatment rooms, nail bar and beauty salon and guests will also be given complimentary use of an indoor, heated swimming pool and the hotel’s extensive leisure and fitness facilities.
Paul Weild, the hotel’s regional head of sales and marketing, said: “The Scotch Corner hotel has been a landmark for generations of people travelling north and south along the A1.
“We would love to hear from anyone who remembers it from its early days – who perhaps attended its popular tea dances in the 1940s and 50s or stayed here to break up a lengthy car journey?
“We are delighted with the results of our refurbishment and look forward to offering a VIP stay here to whoever has the earliest memory of the hotel.”
