One of the world’s best for sustainability

Inspira Santa Marta Hotel

Michelle Chenery reports on Lisbon’s Inspira Santa Marta Hotel

Just a few steps from Avenida da Liberdade in the very centre of Lisbon is an oasis of calm and tranquillity. It is the Inspira Santa Marta boutique hotel.
This is a unique property because of its dedication to a concept built on the basis of environmental sustainability and social responsibility. It adheres to the guidance of Feng-Shui through the entire hotel. It believes in maintaining the balance between humanity and the world around us and strives to create an oasis of harmony, in which all the positive energies of Feng-Shui are able to flow freely, revitalising the mind and soul.

The decoration of the hotel and the location of the rooms are all relevant to to the ever-present philosophy of the five elements of water, fire, wood, earth and metal.

Quick Facts
Number of guest rooms: 89 rooms, 7 suites
Number of meetings rooms: 2 and 1 Auditorium
Meeting room capacity: 2 -110
Auditorium capacity: 48

For the past five years the hotel has chosen to have its sustainable practices certified to Green Globe’s internationally recognised standards. RIt has now been awarded Gold Membership and recertification at a score of 94%, confirming Inspira Santa Marta as one of the top-performing hotels in the world for sustainable operations and management.

The hotel itself comprises 89 rooms, including seven suites and two adapted for guests with reduced mobility. Each room is allocated according to the guest who is staying there, the hotel asking for your date of birth before you arrive so that they can allocate the most appropriate elemental room, based on year of birth and star sign. Guests can find the revitalisation power of a ‘water influenced’ room, tranquillity in an ‘earth’ room, or let a ‘fire’ room awake all of their senses, or, if travelling on business, a ‘metal’ room to favour concentration and determination. Guests with an intrinsic curiosity and an inborn need for learning will feel at home in a ‘wood’ room.

Single rooms, measuring 15sqm, feature a comfortable double bed and a decor tastefully based on the five elements. A Deluxe Twin spans 30sqm, offers Fair Trade tea, internet, safe, bathrobe and slippers and Nespresso coffee. Ironing facilities can be provided on request and an extra bed can be made available.

Superior rooms are 23sqm and boast a queen-size double bed, tea and Nespresso coffee, free Wi-Fi, air conditioning, bathrobe and slippers, wake-up service, plug and play, audio by cable, Bluetooth, video by HDMI, USB or VGA, LCD TV, safe, complimentary toiletries and are furnished with a work desk and an easy chair with foot rest. There is free access to the fitness room, sauna, Jacuzzi and steam bath.

A 50sqm Suite Inspira has an 18sqm living room with an LCD TV and sofas. The bedroom features a king-size double bed and a round bathtub. It offers all the same in room amenities as a Superior room. The Grand Suite measures 73sqm and has a separate lounge. It has a king-size double bed and interconnects with a Superior room with a queen-size bed. The Suite Spa has its own Jacuzzi on a balcony.

Choice of function spaces
The hotel has a 48-seat Auditorium and two meeting rooms, each able to cater for up to 110 guests at a cocktail reception or 90 theatre-style.

In keeping with its own sustainability policy, the hotel has developed the ‘Green Meetings’ concept to follow sustainable procedures, such as energy-saving policies, low energy bulbs or a-v equipment with low environmental impact. Both meetings rooms are equipped with air conditioning, telephone, Inspira water, notepads and pencils, digital flipchart, video conference system, screen projector and sound system. There is free w-fi access.

The Auditorium is equipped with a projection screen, Bose sound system and Blu-ray. On request notepads, pencils, phone connection, a digital flipchart and video conference system can be provided.

In the Wellness Center guests can make full use of the sauna, steam bath and Jacuzzi or they can choose to release some endorphins in the well-equipped Fitness Room. The ReTreat, managed by RitualSpa, features a wellness area, individual and double rooms equipped with colour therapy, water therapy and Vichy shower. There is an elegant tea room to complete the whole experience in peace and quiet.

The spa offers a range of signature treatments, including an authentic Portuguese massage with pindas of mineral salt, olive oil and spices that pays homage to the Portuguese navigators. A wide range of Elemis treatments are all eco-friendly.

Another option for functions is the Urban Bar on the ground floor that can seat up 50. It serves a wide range of cocktails and in the cold season guests are invited to relax in front of a fire and to warm up with the help of a Portuguese liqueur. Football matches can be shown on a big screen.

The hotel’s restaurant Open Brasserie Mediterrânica also has a mood inspired by Feng Shui. It is certified gluten free. Guests can taste the choicest local produce which is always fresh (and whenever possible organic) and the best examples that Mediterranean cuisine has to offer.

The restaurant, seating up to 80 guests, also meets other special diet requirements, with options such as lactose-free, vegetarian, vegan and dishes specially prepared for diabetic guests.

In the hotel and the restaurant all sales of drinking water go towards the sponsorship of water pumps in Africa in partnership with Pump Aid. The Brasserie is also committed to a no-waste project that provides food for the needy.
