PortAventura – a world class and versatile events option

Mansión de Lucy PortAventura

Michelle Chenery reports on a Fam Trip to see much more than a theme park

PortAventura has so many facilities for every kind of business event that all organisers should make sure they are familiar with it. Just an hour from Barcelona, it offers Spanish sunshine, access through a key international airport, the wonders of a great theme park, a choice of hotels, golf courses and a wide range of conference spaces.

The region is dotted with historic towns and the Costa Dorada coastline has beautiful beaches. PortAventura Park and PortAventura Convention Centre work together as PortAventura Business and Events. In its first year, this new alliance welcomed 70,000 people and hosted over 300 events.

They ranged incentive programmes, team building, conferences and product launches. The PortAventura Conference Centre itself harmonises with its Mediterranean surroundings. The planning of the building took into account sustainability and respect for its environment, working to make the most of the natural surroundings and resources. The centre has natural daylight in the majority of its rooms and both water and energy resources are re-used and recycled as much as possible. All of the halls have access to outside areas, allowing delegates and exhibitors to enjoy the nature, the climate and views over golf courses and out to sea.

‘PortAventura has fantastic facilities in their conference centre. They have large open spaces which can be utilised for a variety of different events. With the close proximity to the theme park and the endless possibilities for space, PortAventura would be a great location for your small scale meeting or large scale conference’

The 2-storey Centre consists of 18 versatile rooms hosting from 10 to 3,000 delegates. The largest has a dedicated loading bay and a ceiling height of over 6 metres. Up to 2,400 people can sit theatre style and up to 810 cabaret style. Retractable tiered seating accommodates up to 1,250.

An amphitheatre seats up to 150 and there are spaces designed for intimate meetings and board room discussions.

The PortAventura Conference Centre has hosted a range of events, including the International Golf Travel Market, the LoReal Business Forum and the Peugeot Convention.

‘Some of our clients regularly have meeting requests for around 1000 delegates. The Conference Centre at PortAventura offers great meeting space for focused business meetings with lots of break-out rooms, and the Mediterranean climate offers a relaxing environment to incentivise the group after a busy day of meetings. The catering throughout PortAventura is of high standard and the Theme Park allows for some unusual spaces to take the group for private events or an off-site dinner experience whilst staying on-site. The team are a pleasure to work with and I'm sure we will continue our great working relationship in the future.’

Close to the Convention Centre are four 4-star hotels and one 5-star hotel with a total of over 2,000 rooms The closest, with direct access to the convention centre, is the Hotel PortAventura, styled to recreate the life of a calm and peaceful fishing village on the Mediterranean coast. It has 500 rooms, two buffets, an a la carte restaurant, two pools, a snack bar, gym, a shop and games area. It also has direct access to the Mediterranean area of the theme park.

At the 549-room PortAventura Hotel Gold River, guests can take a step into the Wild West. The property recreates Sullivan, an old wild west town and follows the story of Lucy Callaghan and her discovery of a large gold deposit along the Gold River. Guests rooms are located within wild west buildings, each with a unique character.

PortAventura Hotel Caribe is in Caribbean style, its buildings named after different Islands. It features one of Europe's largest white sand pools. There are 497 rooms and five pools. Standard rooms measure approximately 24sqmand have a balcony, air-con, a safe, minibar, writing desk and flat screen TV. The 501-room Hotel El Paso is in the style of a Mexican Hacienda. It offers inclusive rates. It provides Tex-Mex cuisine in the El Coyote Restaurant, decorated with portraits of famous Hollywood stars. The 5-star hotel within the complex is the Mansión de Lucy. ‘I was very impressed with PortAventura. It’s great for business meetings. The Convention Centre is very versatile and great for serious business meetings. Before my trip I thought PortAventura was just for groups who want to use a theme park, but its far more than that. The Conference Centre is second to none and can do groups of 1000+ and as we are always looking out for venues which can hold large groups, this was definitely the venue’.

A short ride from PortAventura park is Lumine Beach, a perfect spot for private functions, chill out parties with live music while taking in the Mediterranean surroundings. There are three different swimming pools: an infinity pool that seems to merge with the sea, another with sand and sea water and another that is heated. The Lumine restaurant can cater for up to 240 diners banquet style and 300 guests for cocktails. The Beach Club is able to host up to 1,000 cocktail style.

Portaventura Park itself is divided into six separate sections, each taking on a particular style and flavour. The main entrance leads into Mediterånia, recreating a charming fishing village. The main ride in this area is Furius Baco, a horizontal catapult that fires you from 0 to 135 km/h in three seconds.

On the lake at certain times of the day a spectacle of fire, water, electricity, pyrotechnics and special affects takes place. There are three restaurants within Mediterånia, where visitors can enjoy authentic Mediterranean cuisine, Racó de Mar, Il Caffè di Roma and Vinosfera Tapes i Vins. Our group enjoyed a wine tasting session with representatives from Bodegas Torres, tasting some of their full bodied white and red wines, before tucking into a generous helping of tapas dishes.

‘I was extremely impressed with the convention centre at PortAventura. It really is a world class meeting facility, versatile, modern, with superb outside space. If clients are thinking of a theme park, this really should be on the wish list, with some excellent options for the evening, including a beach club, ideal for private  dining/cocktail options. all supported with friendly staff, good food and great service!

The Park’s Polynesia area recreates the landscape vegetation and environment of the Pacific islands. The main ride is the Tutuki Splash, a seemingly dormant volcano full of surprises with an exciting descent. There is also a new 4d simulator called Ice Age.

The China area, based on Mongolia and Imperial China, offers visitors ornate roofs with glittering gold adornments and carvings, as well as the Dragon Khan ride. Not for the faint hearted, this races through eight vertical loops at a speed of 110km/h. Mexico offers its own Mayan pyramid, dense vegetation, ancient ruins and rhythmic Mexican music. The La Cantina serves traditional Mexican dishes, which can also be privately hired for large groups of an evening. Diners can enjoy open air dancing in this post colonial plaza themed restaurant.

Park visitors can also adventure into the Far West to enjoy American style cuisine in the Iron Horse, The Old Steak House and Jeremia's Food. Or they can test their mettle on Stampida, a wooden roller coaster that reaches 70km\h. Less challenging rides can be found in SésamoAventura along with Bert and Ernie and other characters from Sesame Street.

All of the areas of the park and some of the rides can be hired exclusively for private events. Earlier this year the first stone of FerrariLand was laid. It is to be ready for business in 2016 with an area of 75,000 sqm. High tech attractions will offer excitement for all ages and fans of the Ferrari brand. They will combine references to Formula 1, to many aspects of traditional Italy and also allusions to the early days of the brand founder, Enzo Ferarri.
