International exhibition achieves over £1.1m worth of event leads for Sheffield

This year’s International Confex at new venue, ExCel Exhibition Centre, proved a huge success for Sheffield Convention Bureau as the partnership achieved just short of 100 new client contacts as well as an impressive £1.1million worth of event enquiries.

Caroline Wilson, for Sheffield Convention Bureau, said: “Despite initial concerns that the new venue would see a drop in numbers to the show, we are delighted that the percentage of convertible enquiries we received were significantly increased with more than 40% requiring a bid proposal in the short or medium term. Also, just two weeks after the event, we have secured a site visit for a potential major event as a result of an editorial feature which was distributed at Confex.”

At this year’s exhibition, the Sheffield City Region brought a quirky element to the show with magician to the stars, Steve Faulkner, who was on-stand dazzling delegates with his slight-of-hand tricks alongside stand-share partners Sheffield International Venues, Magna, Sheffield Hallam University, Doncaster Racecourse and East Midlands Trains.

Caroline added: “Confex provided us with a great platform to showcase our first-class venues which range from sporting, academic, cultural, historic and environmentally friendly.

“The positive feedback from the exhibition suggests that Sheffield is still very high on the agenda for conference organisers and we are looking forward to welcoming organisers to the region in the near future to showcase the city.”

The success of Confex follows the recent announcement that Sheffield will welcome over £2 million worth of events in 2012. Events to name a few include The Global Manufacturing Festival, the National Union of Students (NUS) national conference, the Annual Conference for the British Association for Ophthalmic Pathology, the Fitness Industry Association Conference and Awards Ceremony and the Society of British Neurological Surgeons Conference.
