Californian Hot Spots

California’s beach and desert resorts target the UK market
Two promotions executives were stranded in London when the volcanic ash prevented them from flying back home. They were Mark Graves, Executive Director of Marketing and Communications for Palm Springs Desert Resorts and Daniel Guerrero, Director of Communications of Newport Beach.Although both from California, they were promoting very different locations. Newport Beach is, as its name implies, on the coast. And the ‘Desert Resorts’ part of the Palm Springs title also gives a hint as to its nature. However, because of the big cars and fast roads, it is only a two-hour drive from one to the other and they are quite happy to sell themselves as a two-header destination to any corporate event organiser who would like their groups to enjoy two very different experiences. The Desert Resorts, Mark explained, are actually separate townships nestling at the foot of the mountains inland from Los Angeles. They offer a range of luxury hotels, a choice of 180 golf courses, hot weather but a very dry heat, that is eminently bearable, except, perhaps, in the summer, when it reaches 120degF. Newport Beach, on the other hand, has all the water sports and an average year-round temperature of 74degF.

Palm Springs is the venue for a wide range of annual events that are visitor attractions in themselves and would suit as focal points for incentive programmes. The golf courses, for example, are the scene of tournaments such as the Bob Hope and the Frank Sinatra Classics. The destination is well known for its specialist film gatherings, such as the Festival of 1950s Films.
Newport Beach is one of a string of resorts just far south of Los Angeles to be a totally separate, quieter entity, but close enough to make use of the LA facilities if guests choose to do so. It is in Orange County, within easy reach of Anaheim, the home of Disneyland, and near to Long Beach to the north and the San Diego resorts further south.
The destination offers 3,000 rooms in all types of hotels, of which many are eminently suitable for meetings for up to 250 or 300 delegates.
