TripAdvisor has named Torquay as 4th in their Traveller's Choice, Top 10 Destinations in the UKWith the first three favourite destinations being London, Edinburgh and Liverpool, all big cities, Torquay came in at number 4 as the highest rated resort in the country. The Trip Advisor report describes Torquay, which is located on Devon’s beautiful English Riviera, as having a distinctively Mediterranean feel. Attractions such as Torquay’s marine aviary, famous Kent’s Cavern underground show caves and its links to Agatha Christie were all highlighted.
The English Riviera Tourism Company’s Chief Executive Carolyn Custerson said, “I am delighted that Torquay on the English Riviera has been recognised as one of the top destinations in the country. It is particularly rewarding to have achieved this accolade in a year when the Queen’s Jubilee and the Olympics are drawing journalists from all over the world to visit the UK. We have a fantastic product to offer across all ages and an exceptionally warm welcome. It’s just wonderful that everybody’s hard work has been paying off with everyone working together to promote the resort much more creatively. “
“Customer reviews are now a very powerful marketing tool and influence customers decisions to purchase in the way they do”. Top rated attractions were Kent's Cavern, Bygones, Babbacombe Theatre and Greenway Ferry and Pleasure Cruises. Top rated restaurants included Orange Tree restaurant and Old Vienna Restaurant. Top hotels included Charterhouse, which recently won Trip Advisor's Top UK Hotel Award and its Best UK Service Award. Elmdene and the Somerville were among top reviewed hotels also mentioned.
This is evidently welcome news for the Bay’s conference industry competing to win conference business in a highly competitive national UK market. Nicky Harding, Conference Torquay Manager, Conference Torquay said: “This is brilliant news for us, and can really help boost our own marketing effort in winning conferences to Torquay. Having a top accolade of this nature behind us obviously raises the profile of Torquay and will give us the edge as a serious contender in the UK wide conference market”.
