Accra Beach Hotel and Spa scoop sustainability award

April saw the newly refurbished Accra Beach Hotel and Spa pick up the Sustainable Accommodation Award at the 13th Annual Caribbean Conference on Sustainable Tourism Development. The event, which was held at the Guyana International Conference Centre, saw the accomplished Accra team fight off stiff competition from the likes of Hotel Mockingbird Hill and The Tyrall Club in Jamaica to take the award.

The resort, which is actively targeting the UK meetings and incentive market, was heralded for positively impacting the local supply chain and community in Barbados whilst minimizing negative environmental impact, and contributing to conservation of local culture.

The 2012 awards comprised of five categories covering all aspects of sustainability, from overall excellence, to accommodation, community, heritage and biodiversity. The awards were judged by a panel of three tourism and environmental specialists; Jacqueline Kuehnel, Principal at JK Consulting Enterprises in Canada, Andrew Rhikkie Alexander, Eco-agro Community Participation Tourism Specialist for Guyana and St. Lucia, and the CTO’s Sustainable Tourism Product Specialist, Gail Henry.

The CTO awards were set up to identify, recognise and showcase sustainable tourism best practices in the Caribbean which embrace sustainable tourism concepts and core values, and help enhance tourism product offerings in the region.
