Sandman Signature Hotel Newcastle scoops a top property award
The Sandman Signature Hotel Newcastle, the first in the UK to be opened by leading Canadian hospitality chain the Sandman Hotel Group, scooped the Commercial Property of the Year honour at the RICS North East Renaissance Awards, held to celebrate excellence across a variety of sectors.Housed on the site of the former Scottish and Newcastle Brewery at Gallowgate, opposite the Newcastle United ground, the multi-million pound hotel was praised by judges for “breathing new life into the last existing brewery building on the site where brewing had occurred for over 125 years.”
The winners were picked by a panel of independent property experts and announced at the 2012 RICS North East Renaissance Awards ceremony and dinner at Newcastle Civic Centre on Friday (April 27).
In awarding the honour to the Sandman Signature Hotel Newcastle, the panel added: “This hotel is one of several developments that have helped regenerate the local area and make it a vibrant part of the city again.
“While being stylish and contemporary, some of the historical elements of the original building have been maintained, including the Blue Star on the east elevation that signified excellent quality.“
The hotel beat off competition from six other shortlisted finalists from across the North East to scoop the prize, including from the new Jury’s Inn Hotel, Gateshead and Newcastle’s newest business centre, The Toffee Factory.
The Sandman Hotel Group owns more than 40 hotels, resorts, inns and suites across Canada and the judging panel praised the company for its vision in choosing to bring back to life an important building that had fallen by the wayside.
The four star, 175-bedroom hotel, which recently unveiled two on-site conference rooms and boasts a variety of bedrooms, including fully-equipped, self-catering suites, is ideally situated for leisure as well as corporate guests and easily accessed by rail, road and coach.
Director of the Sandman Hotel Group in the UK, Mitchell Gaglardi, said: “Even though the Sandman Signature Hotel Newcastle is contemporary and design forward, we were keen from the start to be sympathetic to its structure and respectful of its Scottish and Newcastle heritage.
“We are delighted and honoured to have won this prestigious award with our first UK site and hope our future Sandman Signature hotels here in the UK will be equally as well received.”
