The awards, which took place at the five-star May Fair Hotel in London on November 7th 2016, have an international reputation and competition is stiff.
The Glazebrook House Hotel, which opened just two years ago, is no stranger to the awards, being named Best Small and Exclusive Hotel at last year’s ceremony.
This year it’s the Glazebrook’s wine list which has received recognition in the Small and Beautiful category.
Pieter Hamman, who owns the hotel in South Brent with his wife Fran, is delighted with this latest award which he says recognises the “enormous effort” they put into creating the wine list for the hotel, praised by Condé Nast Johansens as “fantastical and artistic with a cool vintage vibe” on winning in 2015. Pieter has worked with local wine expert Rebecca Mitchell to create the cellar and there is a dedicated wine and whisky tasting room at the hotel.
“We have such good comments about the wine list from our guests,” says Pieter. “Rebecca is very talented. She was referred to us by someone in the industry when the hotel was still under construction, well before we opened. We needed help and Rebecca has been the perfect fit.”
“We focused the list on places I’ve lived in and was familiar with, starting with South Africa where I was originally from, then moved on to Australia and New Zealand which I knew very well from ten years I spent in Hong Kong. Then I moved to California close to the Napa Valley and Sonoma where there are some beautiful wines.”
“Rebecca’s background helped with finding wines from France, Italy, Spain, Germany and England, whilst also expanding the list to include Champagnes, rosé, and pudding wines. “We’re constantly working on the list and it’s an on-going project. The wine list is arranged according to the varietal and style of wine – light to heavy, to full-bodied – with a description of the wine. It makes it easier for people to match the wine to what they’re eating. It keeps it relatively simple; not too complicated.”
Rebecca has also been running training courses at The Glazebrook House Hotel to pass on some of her knowledge to staff.
The Glazebrook Hotel opened in May 2014 and has been winning awards since day one. Last month [October 2016] they were named Best Hotel Restaurant in the Food and Drink Devon ‘Love the Flavour’ awards and collected silver in the Hotel of the Year category at the English Riviera and South Devon Tourism and Hospitality Awards. They appear in the 2017 Good Food Guide in which the undercover inspector praised the food as “inspired, exciting, full of confidence, inventive without being technologically gimmicky and obviously founded on sterling ingredients.”
In November last year Glazebrook House received the award for excellence as Best Small and Exclusive Hotel at the prestigious Conde Nast Johansens Awards. In the same month Devon Life gave it the accolade of Best Hotel Restaurant of the Year in their Food and Drink Awards. The Sunday Times has included it in a list of 100 Ultimate British Hotels for two years running.
