Just six months after it opened to the public, the hotel, located on Newcastle’s emerging Stephenson Quarter, scooped the prestigious prize at the annual awards, run by the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors to celebrate and honour the most inspirational initiatives in the land, property and construction sectors.
The award-winning £40m project opened its doors last September and was delivered by Clouston Group, Space Architects, Faithful+Gould and Galliford Try. The stunning seven-storey, 251-bed hotel boasts a plush interior, including a magnificent 25m glass atrium which provides panoramic views of the city from all levels of the building.
In addition, Hawthorns brasserie and The GIN Bar offer chic surroundings to enjoy fresh local produce and specialty martinis while Mineral House spa is a luxurious sanctuary in the city with a 10-metre feature pool, spa pool, steam room, TechnoGym and three treatment rooms.
Michelle Percy, managing director of Stephenson Hotel Ltd and director of the hotel developer, Clouston Group, said: “I am delighted to win such a prestigious award. It recognises all of the hard work and team effort that has been instrumental to the success of the project and we’re honoured to be recognised for excellence in this way.”
RICS judges described the building as a stunning hotel, conference and leisure facility which has proved a catalyst for the first phase of an ambitious masterplan to create a vibrant mixed use quarter to the south of Central Station.
Adam Serfontein, chair of the judging panel said: “We are extremely impressed by the remarkable calibre of entries this year. Whilst the winners and the highly commended range from unique small scale schemes, through to multi million pound developments, they are all positively contributing to our region and ensuring our cities and town remain fantastic places to live, work and visit. The teams behind these projects should be immensely proud of themselves.”
All category winners will go on to compete against other regional winners at the national RICS Awards Grand Final on 14 October 2016 in London, for the chance to be crowned the overall UK winner in their respective category.
