Sustainability Advisor Seminars receive award from the German UNESCO Commission

Seminars organised by The GCB German Convention Bureau e.V. for sustainability advisors in the events sector have been awarded the title of project of the UN Decade in "Education for Sustainable Development". This outstanding award acknowledges the work of The GCB relating to green meetings.

"Seminars for sustainability advisors demonstrate in an impressive way what future-oriented education could look like. The jury voted for the project because it explains how people can operate on a sustainable basis in a way we can understand", says Professor Gerhard de Haan, Chairman of the National Committee and of the Jury for the UN Decade in Germany.

The distinction is awarded for initiatives that implement the objective of the United Nations' worldwide education campaign in an exemplary way: they explain the concept of sustainable thought and action to adults and children. The requirements for the award include, amongst other things, that the project must impart knowledge and expertise from the three dimensions of sustainability: economic, social and environmental, be of an innovative character and have a far-reaching impact.

Petra Hedorfer, CEO of the German National Tourist Board (DZT) says: "It is not only meetings and conferences but the whole German tourist industry and all sectors of science and the economy that use events as an instrument for communication and dissemination of knowledge that will benefit from this project."

Matthias Schultze, Managing Director of the GCB says: "The GCB team works in many ways to establish the subject of sustainability in the German events sector and we’re very pleased about this award. Feedback from participants has also encouraged us to continue to provide further training. The seminars give companies operating in the events sector a good opportunity to present themselves as exemplary operators in terms of sustainability".

The further training events are part of a GCB project, sponsored by the DBU (German Federal Environmental Foundation) and carried out in co-operation with the EVVC (European Association of Event Centres), to reduce carbon dioxide emissions at events.
